Edge Unbeaten in Last 7
West Michigan Battles Toronto to Scoreless Draw

It might not always be pretty, but developmental soccer team the West Michigan Edge have not lost their last seven games after battling to a feisty 0-0 draw with the Toronto Lynx at East Grand Rapids’ Memorial Field. The game produced only 12 shots on goal from both teams combined.  The Edge currently stand in third place in the Great Lakes Division of the Professional Development League with a 5-3-5 record. Goalkeeper Chris Austin earned his fifth shutout of the year, including his third against Toronto.

Head coach Mark Bell said Toronto’s physical play was designed to get the Edge off of their game plan. “We always have to know what we want to do,” Bell said. “If we get caught up what they’re doing or what want us to do, then we’ll just be victims.”

Midfielder Zach Scafiddi says that while he feels the Edge could have won the game, he has no problem taking the standings point from a tie. “It would be nice to get three points, but, being just out of second place we feel that as long we can keep going out and producing results and getting points, not necessarily wins, we’ll be fine,” Scafiddi said.

The Edge have been stuck in third place for over a month, and have slowly closed the gap between themselves and the second place Chicago Fire reserves. The Edge are currently only four points behind Chicago, however, with only three games remaining, time is running out in their chase.

“Our streak lately has probably raised our confidence a little, but we’re still chasing,” Bell said. “We know who we are and we’re not going to beat teams 4-0 or 5-0. We’re going to beat teams 1-0 and 2-0 and if we can do that down the stretch we will be in good shape.”

The Edge play Great Lakes-leading Michigan Bucks away Saturday before returning home to play the Cleveland Internationals July 18.
